Beyond Mykonos is a multi-colored universe of flora, felines and females by Luis Orozco that will be on exhibit at Cinema Manto Mykonos beginning Friday July 17th and running through to the end of September. Luis Orozco, a Mexican born painter and adopted Mykonos native since 1960, has been an island artisan for the past 55 years. Orozco says “I didn’t come to Greece with the intention of staying, but I found a paintable island with plenty of material for a lifetime.” Beyond Mykonos uses the subject matter of women, bold interiors, cats and flowers. As to Mykonos Orozco says, “The landscape, I found very paintable, full of textures: rocks, boulders, the stubble of the dry wheat, and the beautiful cypress trees, with their dark greens, and the silver gray-green of the olive trees.

The stone walls I sometimes render deep red to convey the heat of warm days.” Aside from the paintings themselves, the best part of the exhibition is its actual setting. The garden of Cine Manto Mykonos is shielded from the strong northerly winds common to the island in July and August as well as being insulated from the scorching heat of the day. The garden restaurant is a haven and refuge from the elements. It is a magical setting of natural space, whether shaded on a hot afternoon by the leafy palms that form a green ceiling or under the canvas of stars dotted across the night sky. The vibrant color and the dynamic strokes intrinsic in the works of Luis Orozco are even more inspiring in this enchanting setting.
